Freediving in Phuket – Seasons, Conditions & Best Time to Dive

Phuket is one of the best freediving destinations in Thailand, offering warm water all year, easy access to depth, beautiful marine life, and sheltered bays perfect for training. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a certified freediver looking to improve your depth, freediving in Phuket is possible 365 days a year.

Our Approach

At our school, we have our own boat directly on the beach, giving us full flexibility to choose the best locations and departure times depending on wind, waves, and tides. With deep knowledge of every freediving spot around Phuket, we can always find safe and calm areas—even in the monsoon season.

Below is everything you need to know about freediving conditions in Phuket, including seasons, visibility, water temperature, and the best months to visit.

February – April
Hot, Dry & Sunny Season

This is the hottest and driest time of the year, with long sunny days and very little rain.

  • Long sunshine hours almost every day

  • Wind and waves mainly come from the east

  • Mornings are often windy and slightly choppy

  • Afternoons are usually calm and ideal

  • Visibility can sometimes be slightly green and less clear due to plankton growth from strong sunlight

  • Water temperature: 29–30°C

Best conditions: Afternoon sessions are typically the calmest.

Pros:

  • Very reliable sunshine

  • Ideal for first experiences and relaxed sessions

Cons:

  • More crowded

  • Higher prices for flights and accommodation

This is the best time if you want guaranteed sunshine, though not always the clearest water.

May – October
Green season

Expect more rain and changeable conditions, but also a quieter, more peaceful side of the island.

  • Wind and swell come from the west (Andaman Sea)

  • The west coast has waves and becomes the surf season

  • Many bays (including Nāma Bay) are protected and remain calm

  • Weather is variable: it can rain all day or be sunny with short evening showers

  • Water is often very clear

  • Water temperature: 30–31°C

  • Phuket is lush and green

Boat trips may occasionally be cancelled due to offshore storms.

Pros:

  • Fewer tourists and quieter beaches

  • Cheaper flights and accommodation

  • Beautiful green landscapes

Cons:

  • Less predictable weather

  • Some flexibility required

A great season for travellers who prefer fewer crowds, lower prices, and Phuket at its greenest.

Transition Season

This period sits between the rainy and dry seasons.

  • Wind and swell directions change frequently

  • Weather can vary quickly from day to day

  • Conditions are more variable

  • Water is often very clear

  • Water temperature: 28–30°C

Pros:

  • Good balance of conditions

  • Clear water

  • Comfortable temperatures

Cons:

  • Busy season

  • Higher prices for flights and accommodation

This is a very good time to visit, especially with proper planning.

Why Local Knowledge Matters

Freediving conditions in Phuket vary significantly depending on location and timing.

  • One area can be rough while another is completely calm

  • The best time of day changes with the season

  • Visibility and currents differ between sites

  • Adjust timing based on conditions

  • Focus on safety and comfort

  • Provide the best possible experience regardless of season
